When I'm $200 poorer

I feel so honoured that within my three-year study in NTU I’m able to experience twice tuition fee hikes consecutively. From $6,220 p.a. to $6,520 to $6,720 next year, meaning I’ve to fork out $800 more than I budgeted from somewhere else.

Nevertheless, this was the expected move immediately after the gahmen (Singlish version of government) announced the privatization of the local universities. No surprise. No, I’m trying to cry to the world how poor have I been and yet still being robbed. No, and it’s not another post just to complain.

I just feel that these decision makers’ mind are just too narrow, even though caring some prestigious titles and statuses in the society. It seems like there’s only one way out, one solution for some many issues.

What say do we as students have? All are just for formality sake. Useless. Unless there’s a really smart one stands out to speak for the students (hey they say there’s freedom of speech). But will that happen? Bear in mind that the smart minds are definitely not affected. They are not to be disturbed for their studies. They should not be. They have to have the peace of mind to strive for the best for themselves, and for … ahem… NTU. Therefore they don’t the time and incentive to lead the students to lobby, to shout, to be heard, to protest also because they simply don’t have to. Their sponsors are the ones should do so if they want to, since nobody forces them to provide scholarships at the first place. Oh, we poor ones… struggling to be world class outwardly and yet much more struggling inwardly.

Don’t ask the student how they feel. Ask yourself. Take and walk in the campus, observe what they wear, use, drive, etc. There is a Mercedes SLK parking in front of one the lecture theaters everyday. Many feet are wrapped nicely, especially a ‘tick’ on it, the bigger the merrier. Many are proud of the red tags that stuck on their butts. They are the very same group of people who also make complains! But, why are they so particular about the $200?

There’s an unspoken phenomenon out there. Nobody admits that. In general, no matter how poor a person claims himself or herself to be, they just don’t mind to pay a premium for the luxury to fulfill the never-satisfied soul. A little bit of sacrifice won’t hurt that much. Here, no significant incentive to initiate something.

As a private organization now, NTU should, and have to cut costs! How many companies in the world, when facing increasing costs, keep raising their price hoping the customers to remain silent and faithful? When the tongkat has been taken away, NTU has to learn to walk on her own. Learn from SIA or other big firms how they cut costs. How can they teach MBAs and yet don’t know how to apply the knowledge in the very same organization they are in? Axe one off and that can save NTU and the students a lot.

Oh dear, SGD800 is equal to RM1800++ and that is A LOT! Anyway, after the $200 hike will only leave me with the left Adidas shoe and shorter Levi’s jeans and Nokia phone without 3G functionality. Haiz… I’m not qualified to draw any sympathy from others. Who cares bout them by the way?
